The Nature & Science Foundation is an NGO working on introducing the biodiversity and the wildlife of Egypt to youth and undergraduates, to raise their capacities as young researchers in field-based research. It works in collaboration with Operation Wallacea (or OpWall for short, www.opwall.com), a charity based in the UK that has been bringing UK students to Egypt over the last five years to carry out biodiversity surveys. The biodiversity monitoring programmes are open to students to join during the summer holidays, for volunteers from both state and private universities, and from high schools. The Nature & Science Foundation is mainly concerned with ‘atlassing’ i.e. systematically surveying biodiversity across Egypt to see which species occur where. This involves mapping the records and matching them with environmental data in order to create the actual and the potential distribution of Egyptian fauna and flora. The data are collected systematically with established scientific techniques. We are especially interested in sustainable surveys and atlassing of the biodiversity of Egypt's national parks. The Nature & Science Foundation’s initial plan is to survey the St Katherine Protected Area (South Sinai), the White Desert (Western Desert) & Wadi Digla, targeting plants, butterflies, reptiles birds, mammals and bats.

NSF is currently working on producing guide books for the Fauna and Flora of Egypt in English and Arabic. Guide books for native fauna and flora as we believe is a major step in initiating the love of wildlife and introducing the biodiversity to youth and children. This is in addition to publishing books and papers.

NSF adopts a public awareness programmes (Nature & I) for children, one of them is in cooperation with Library Department, Ministry of Education. We participated with the Environment workshop in the biannual student camp “Iqraa”08 & 09 held by the Ministry of Education. Through the workshop our representative discusses conservation related issues such as endangered species (tortoise) or invasive species (crayfish) and others. The activities involve reading and then translating what they understood into any form of art (writing stories, poems or paintings).
