Operation Wallacea
The joint expeditions with OpWall started five years ago in 2005, supported by the British Council and the Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs, through the participation of paying volunteers from the UK, USA and Canada. OpWall is an international organization carrying out scientific conservation expeditions in seven other countries (Indonesia, Honduras, Cuba, South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar and Peru).
British Council
The British Council has supported over 100 Egyptian and Arab students to join the expeditions, as part of their programme to support mutual scientific and cultural exchange between Egypt and the UK; this was extended to other Arab countries in 2009 when surveys were carried out in the St. Katharine Protected Area (terrestrial desert habitat) and Dahab (marine coral reef habitat). The mapping project has developed massively during the last few years, all towards the goal of atlassing Egypt’s biodiversity.
